London Knights Grad Alex Henry Will Spend 2012-13 in Germany

After three years as captain of the American Hockey League’s Hamilton Bulldogs, Ontario Hockey League grad Alex Henry is off to Germany for the 2012-13 season. A veteran of exactly 700 AHL games when including the playoffs, Henry will be playing for Dusseldorfer EG of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. In short, Alex will be playing for the DEG Metro Stars of the DEL.

The Cardboard Beginnings of the Sutter Empire

In one of those “never to happen again” events, the Sutter family from Viking, Alberta put six of their sons into the National Hockey League. A little Sutter hockey trivia: All six were drafted out of the Lethbridge Broncos of the WHL. All played for either the St. Louis Blues or Chicago Blackhawks during their NHL careers. Four of the six were first round picks. Recently, the Staal’s have come close but have run out of bodies. Check out the rookie cards of these six Sutter brothers that not only played a few games in the Big Show but thrived.

3 OHL Grads Playing for Italy at 2012 IIHF World Championships

When it comes to the IIHF World Championships, Italy is a country consistently on the edge. The team dominates in the year’s when it competes in Division 1A but is not quite powerful enough to be competitive in the top division. What has resulted over the past years is a yo-yo effect with Italy alternating seasons of being relegated and being promoted.

We’re nearly to the final four in the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs and we thought it would fun to look at the coaches of the eight teams that made it to the conference finals. Well, actually it’s seven coaches because there wasn’t a Ken Hitchcock card to be found. These aren’t necessarily the rookie cards of each of the seven and they may not even be of them as players but they certainly are long before gray hair came into effect.

Michael Houser Just the 5th OHL Goalie to Win the Red Tilson Trophy

Just a few days ago, Michael Houser of the London Knights was named the 2011-12 recipient of the Red Tilson Trophy as the Ontario Hockey League’s most outstanding player. What is unique about this is that Houser is one of just five goaltenders to receive the award.

7 OHL Alumni Playing for Canada at 2012 World Championships

Team Canada begins their quest for IIHF World Championship Gold tomorrow in Helsinki against Slovakia. This years team consists of seven Ontario Hockey League grads on the playing roster and two OHL alumni behind the bench. Just one will be playing on the world stage for the first time.

1976-77 O-Pee-Chee WHA – Road to the Avco Cup

The 1976-77 O-Pee-Chee WHA set featured three hockey cards spotlighting the 1975-76 Avco World Trophy playoffs. There were three playoff cards included in the set, one each for the Canadian final, United States final and Avco Trophy final.

OHL Grad Helps Great Britain Reach Status Quo at IIHF Worlds

Just the facts:

• Neilson has now competed on the world stage for Great Britain twice.
• Corey played in the OHL from 1993-94 to 1996-97 with North Bay, Detroit and Barrie.
• Neilson has played in Great Britain’s EIHL since 2006-07 (all with the Nottingham Panthers).
• Corey was a third round pick of the Edmonton Oilers in 1994.
