For the first time ever, we maxed out the memory card on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 waterproof camera that we use for most of our HD video while travelling. On the last night of our 2012 New Brunswick trip, I was attempting to film the sunset over Nictau Lake at Mount Carleton Provincial Park when the memory ran out. Since, we’ve brought on board two additional cards to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

Paul Henderson 1965-66 Topps 51

Paul Henderson played in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs and Atlanta Flames. Best known for his offensive exploits during the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the Soviet Union when he scored the winning goal in each of Canada's final three wins.

His rookie hockey card appears as number 51 in the 1965-66 Topps set. The card is valued at $50.

HD Video of Forty-Five River Waterfall at Fundy National Park

Just a quick HD Video taken while on vacation in the second week of September, 2012. This waterfall is located on the Forty-Five River at Fundy National Park in New Brunswick, Canada.

The waterfall is located directly below the Forty-Five Road covered bridge - one of the oldest in New Brunswick. The location is about 15 minutes northeast of the town of Alma. Alma is a small fishing village at the edge of the National Park on the Bay of Fundy.

The Rookie Card and Final Card of NHL Legend Jacques Plante

Jacques Plante first played in the National Hockey League during the 1952-53 season, appearing in three regular season games for the Montreal Canadiens. More importantly, Plante shared duties with Gerry McNeil during the Stanley Cup playoffs as Montreal defeated the Boston Bruins to be crowned champions. The following year, he played 17 during the regular season and eight in the playoffs as the Habs fell to the Detroit Red Wings in the finals.

Gordie Drillon O-Pee-Chee Rookie Card

The last time a player from the Toronto Maple Leafs led the NHL in points, the Art Ross Trophy didn’t exist yet. It’s been over seven decades since Gordie Drillon led the league with 52 points over 48 games. Toronto has gone longer than any other active NHL team without winning an individual scoring title.

1961-62 Topps Rod Gilbert RC

We’ve previously featured two of three members of G.A.G. (goal a game) Line from the New York Rangers, Vic Hadfield and Jean Ratelle. Rod Gilbert was the third member of the famous line and arguably the best.

The Rod Gilbert rookie card appears as number 62 in the 1961-62 Topps set. Along with the rookie card of Jean Ratelle, Gilbert’s card is the most valuable RC in the set at $150. The 1961-62 Topps issue consists of 66 cards and is valued at $1500 for a complete collection. The only player cards more valuable than the Rangers stars belong to Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita of the Chicago Black Hawks.

The Most Valuable Rookie Card of the 1961-62 Topps Set

A pair of New York Rangers were at the head of the 1961-62 Topps rookie card class. Jean Ratelle, along with teammate Rod Gilbert, provide the second and third highest valued cards in the set. The Jean Ratelle rookie card appears as number 60 in the set and is valued at $150. Only Bobby Hull is valued higher, at $300. The 1961-62 Topps set consists of 66 cards and a full set is valued at $1500.

Rookie Card of Bruins Great Gerry Cheevers

The Phil Esposito rookie card and Gordie’s Howe’s 600 goal card lead the way for value in the 1965-66 Topps hockey card set. The next step down the ladder in the 128 card set is the rookie card of Gerry Cheevers. The Gerry Cheevers rookie card appears as number 31 in the set and is valued at $200, half that of the Esposito and Howe cards. The set consists of 128 cards and a complete set is valued at $2700.

Richard Park Ambri-Piotta Bound

South Korean born American Richard Park has signed to play the next two seasons with Ambri Piotta of Switzerland’s National League A. The Ontario Hockey League grad is leaving the NHL to return to the league he played in in 2010-11.

The 2nd Most Valuable Rookie Card in the 1957-58 Topps Set

Norm Ullman’s rookie card came out in his third year as a member of the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League. Number 46 of the 1957-58 Topps set, the Norm Ullman rookie card, is valued at $250, the third most valuable hockey card in the set and the second most valuable rookie card.

Rookie Cards of the 2012 Hockey Hall of Fame Inductees

The latest selections to the Hockey Hall of Fame have been made. Not without the usual public disagreement, four great players have been inducted for 2012. Mats Sundin, Pavel Bure, Joe Sakic and Adam Oates have all entered the Hall. Sakic was a no-brainer. Oates should have been inducted much sooner. Sundin and Bure certainly deserve to be there. However, still missing from the Hall of Fame are Rogie Vachon, Pat Burns and Fred Shero, among other snubs.

Rookie Cards of the 1970′s 1st Overall Draft Picks

The 1970′s were the first full decade with the NHL Amateur Draft in existence. The first overall pick is pretty much guaranteed to become a success in the National Hockey League. All ten during the 1970′s went on to NHL careers of varying lengths with varying amounts of success. All ten came from the Canadian Hockey League with seven being drafted from Ontario teams, two from the West and one from Quebec. Two players each came from the London Knights and Ottawa 67′s of the OHA.

The Captains of the 1967-68 NHL Expansion Teams

1967-68 marked the first NHL season for six new franchises. Previously, the league consisted of six teams but found itself to be double the size after the 1966-67 season. The ‘Next Six’ or ‘New Six’ were a rag-tag bunch of rookies, over-the-hill NHL veterans and career minor leaguers in that first year. All six of the new teams were placed in the West Division while all the Original Six were put in the newly formed East Division. To guage the strength of the expansion teams, not even the West Division first place Philadelphia Flyers would have finished any higher than sixth place in the East.

1970-71 O-Pee-Chee – All About Bobby Orr

At no time during his playing career was Bobby Orr celebrated so much on cardboard as he was in 1970-71. The 1970-71 O-Pee-Chee set featured Orr on six different cards. It was well-deserved with Bobby taking the Norris, Conn Smythe, Art Ross and Hart Trophies as well as being named a First Team All-Star defenseman.

Ottawa 67′s Grad Julian Talbot Will Return to Eisbaren Berlin for 2012-13 DEL Season

Julian Talbot will return to Eisbaren Berlin (Berlin Polar Bears) for the 2012-13 season after winning the DEL Championship with the club in 2011-12. It was his first year in Europe after five years and over 350 games in the ECHL and AHL.

1961-62 Topps – The Birth of the Hockey Team Card

For the 1961-62 hockey card season, Topps came up with the bright idea to put a team picture on the front of a card. The team card was born. In 1961-62, Topps produced the player cards for the Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks and New York Rangers and Parkhurst was responsible for the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings. Card numbers 20, 42 and 63 were dedicated to the Topps teams.

The Los Angeles Kings are gunning for their first Stanley Cup championship since joining the National Hockey League for the 1967-68 season. The only other time they have been to the finals was a loss to the Montreal Canadiens in 1992-93. After three years as captain of the American Hockey League’s Hamilton Bulldogs, Ontario Hockey League grad Alex Henry is off to Germany for the 2012-13 season. A veteran of exactly 700 AHL games when including the playoffs, Henry will be playing for Dusseldorfer EG of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. In short, Alex will be playing for the DEG Metro Stars of the DEL.

The Cardboard Beginnings of the Sutter Empire

In one of those “never to happen again” events, the Sutter family from Viking, Alberta put six of their sons into the National Hockey League. A little Sutter hockey trivia: All six were drafted out of the Lethbridge Broncos of the WHL. All played for either the St. Louis Blues or Chicago Blackhawks during their NHL careers. Four of the six were first round picks. Recently, the Staal’s have come close but have run out of bodies. Just a few days ago, Michael Houser of the London Knights was named the 2011-12 recipient of the Red Tilson Trophy as the Ontario Hockey League’s most outstanding player. What is unique about this is that Houser is one of just five goaltenders to receive the award.

1976-77 O-Pee-Chee WHA – Road to the Avco Cup

The 1976-77 O-Pee-Chee WHA set featured three hockey cards spotlighting the 1975-76 Avco World Trophy playoffs. There were three playoff cards included in the set, one each for the Canadian final, United States final and Avco Trophy final.

OHL Grad Helps Great Britain Reach Status Quo at IIHF Worlds

Just the facts:

• Neilson has now competed on the world stage for Great Britain twice.
• Corey played in the OHL from 1993-94 to 1996-97 with North Bay, Detroit and Barrie.
• Neilson has played in Great Britain’s EIHL since 2006-07 (all with the Nottingham Panthers).
• Corey was a third round pick of the Edmonton Oilers in 1994.

2 OHL Grads Gagarin Cup Champs in Russia’s KHL

Russia’s KHL wrapped up the 2011-12 season this past week with Dynamo Moscow being crowned Gagarin Cup champions. Dymano took seven games to oust Avangard Omsk, the score of the final game a tight 1-0. Along the way, Moscow swept Dinamo Minsk in the conference quarter-finals, beat Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod 4-2 in the conference semis and swept CSKA Moscow in the conference finals. Two Ontario Hockey League grads played a role in Dymano’s championship.

5 Brampton Battalion Originals Active in Pro Hockey During 2011-12

In 1998-99 the Brampton Battalion entered the Ontario Hockey League and played as would be expected from an expansion team. With just eight wins and 19 points, Brampton finished in 19th but were still eight points ahead of their expansion cousins, the Mississauga IceDogs. I recall attending a few games in the bunker that first season and remember well the applause when the “One minute to ceasefire.” announcement came on.

The 1974 Philadelphia Flyers Stanley Cup Run on Cardboard

In 1973-74, the Philadelphia Flyers became the first post-1967 expansion team to win the Stanley Cup. The Broad Street Bullies were led by a cast of tough guys and highly skilled players, many were a little of both. The Flyers finished the regular season with 112 points, first in the West Division and one point behind the Boston Bruins for the overall lead.

1973-74 O-Pee-Chee Playoff Hockey Cards

Ah, yes. The Stanley Cup playoffs are in full swing. Back before the days of ProSet and Wayne Gretzky, O-Pee-Chee periodically featured playoff cards as part of their annual set. The 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee set had eight playoff cards, one for each playoff series and one for the Stanley Cup champion. The cards ran from number 191 to 198. All are considered by Beckett Hockey Monthly as common playoff cards and are valued at $1.50 each. All, that is, except for card number 198. The playoff pinnacle card is valued at $5.00.

5 OHL Alumni Among AHL’s Top 20 in 2011-12

A slow finisher, the American Hockey League finally wrapped up its regular season schedule this past weekend. 2011-12 saw some amazing stuff in the AHL, especially the 28 game winning streak to end the season by the Norfolk Admirals (stay tuned for more on the Admirals in our next article). It was not the most offensive year in the league, however. Chris Bourque of the Hershey Bears led the AHL with just 93 points and Cory Conacher of Norfolk led the league in goals with 39. In the race for the John B. Sollenberger Trophy, two Ontario Hockey League alumni finished in the top 10 and a total of five OHL grads placed in the top 20.

2 OHL Alumni Among Top 15 in Norway

Maybe not as strong as in other European leagues in 2011-12, but the Ontario Hockey League presence was felt in Norway’s Get-Ligaen. Two OHL grads placed among the top 15 for points and a third finished 29th. What is really impressive is the OHL alumnus that finished 15th, played less than half the regular season games due to injury and was on a pace that was .70 per game more than the league leader.

1953-54 Parkhurst: More Jean Beliveau at Dickie Moore’s Expense

Jean Beliveau has his picture on the front of two hockey cards in the 1953-54 Parkhurst set, but it wasn’t intended that way. Number 27 is the Jean Beliveau rookie card. Number 28 in the set is Dickie Moore’s second year card but it’s Beliveau on the front and not Moore. The Beliveau rookie card is valued at $600. The Dickie Moore hockey card is a far cheaper way to get a piece of Beliveau in his rookie season at $125. The Dickie Moore rookie card from the previous year is valued at $250 by Beckett Hockey Monthly .

Video and photos taken in April, 2012 at Eugenia Falls in Eugenia, Ontario. The waterfall is located just below Lake Eugenia on the Beaver River, a short drive northeast from Flesherton. Flesherton is located between Toronto and Owen Sound on highway 10.

7 of Top 10 ECHL Goalies in 2011-12 Were OHL Grads

Among the ECHL goalies in 2011-12, with a minimum of 1,440 minutes played (24 games), four of the top six and seven of the top fourteen in terms of goals against average were grads of the Ontario Hockey League. The player with the the best GAA, and the only one below the 2.00 mark, played his OHL days with the London Knights.

1953-54 Parkhurst Al Arbour Error Card

Parkhurst had a problem with mistaken identity in their 1953-54 hockey card set. Al Arbour and Bill Dineen were rookies with the Detroit Red Wings and appearing on cardboard for the first time. Arbour’s rookie card was number 37 and Dineen’s was number 38. The only problem is, it was Dineen’s mug on the number 37 card and Arbour’s on 38. Parkhurst wasn’t done. The card of the Montreal Canadien’s Dickie Moore, number 28, featured a shot of Jean Beliveau on the front of the card.

5 OHL Alumni in the ECHL’s Top 10 in 2011-12

With the ECHL’s Kelly Cup playoffs underway, the final totals from the regular season are in. The race for the ECHL Leading Scorer Award was won by Dustin Gazley of the Elmira Jackals with just 85 points. It was the second lowest point total by a league leader, behind just John Spoltore’s 84 points in 1999-00. A far cry from the ECHL record of 161 set by Trevor Jobe in 1992-93.

1970-71 O-Pee-Chee Darryl Sittler Rookie Card

A trio of rookie cards highlighted the 1970-71 O-Pee-Chee set. Bobby Clarke currently leads the rookies in value at $120. Gilbert Perreault and Darryl Sittler both have their rookie cards in the set and both are valued at $100, according to Beckett Hockey Monthly. Other than checklists, the only player with a more value hockey card in the series is Bobby Orr, whose card is valued at $200.

3 OHL Grads Among Austria’s Top 10 for GAA in 2011-12

An Ontario Hockey League alumnus, John Hughes, led Austria’s Erste Bank Eishockey Liga (EBEL) in points during the 2011-12 regular season. The OHL was also represented quite well between the pipes. Three OHL alumni were among the top ten goaltenders in the EBEL for GAA.

Phil Esposito – the 78 Goal Scorer in 1972-73 (According to O-Pee-Chee)

According to O-Pee-Chee, Phil Esposito broke his own record for most goals in a single season with 78 in 1972-73. This total beat the 76 he scored in 1970-71 by two. Wayne Gretzky would shatter Esposito’s number and establish an unbreakable record with 92 in 1981-82.

Germany’s Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) is well into the 2011-12 playoffs. During the 52 game regular season, three Ontario Hockey League grads placed among the top 20 for goals against average. One, Rob Zepp, placed fourth, 0.02 away from third.

Brent Kelly Top Point Producer While Leading Langenthal to 2011-12 Championship

In each of his three years in Switzerland’s National B, Ontario Hockey League grad Brent Kelly has been in the top five among point-getters. In 2011-12, he tied for the lead with 68 points, the exact same total that placed him fourth the year before. In his first year, he scored 41 goals and totaled 92 points, placing him second in goals and third in points. His first year was spent with Olten and the past two have been with Langenthal.

Himelfarb is 2nd Highest Point Producer in Sweden’s Allsvenskan

After just eleven points in 24 games in his first year with Rogle of Sweden’s Allsvenskan, Ontario Hockey League grad Eric Himelfarb found his touch around the net in 2011-12, finishing second in the league with 60 points in 52 games. Himelfarb led the team with 21 goals and 39 assists. He was six points behind Allsvenskan leader Broc Little and played all of the team’s 52 regular season games.

Sorry O-Pee-Chee – Bobby Clarke Never Won the Art Ross Trophy

In 1974-75, O-Pee-Chee told the hockey card collecting world that it had been two years since Bobby Clarke had won the Art Ross Trophy. Unfortunately, Clarke never won the Art Ross Trophy in his entire National Hockey League career. What he did win in 1972-73 was the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s Most Valuable Player, the first of three during his career.

1974-75 O-Pee-Chee Lanny McDonald Rookie Card

His number is retired by the Calgary Flames. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. He was the fourth overall pick in the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft. He played in the Stanley Cup finals twice, winning once. His rookie hockey card was one of the highlights of the 1974-75 O-Pee-Chee set.

OHL Grad Rips Up The Scoring Race in Italy

Ontario Hockey League grad Peter Campbell is no stranger to a scoring race. No matter what team or country he plays in throughout the hockey world, Campbell nearly always finds himself amongst the top scorers. Peter has spent the past three years in Italy’s Lega Italiana Hockey su Ghiaccio Serie A2 with the HC Eppan Pirates. Twice he has led the league in points and twice he has led the league in goals. In 2011-12 he wasn’t the highest goal scorer but he ripped up the league in points.

Sudbury Wolves Grad Leads Germany’s DEL in Points for 2011-12

Former Sudbury Wolves star Norm Milley has finished Germany’s Deutsche Eishockey Liga regular season as the leader in the points department. Milley scored 14 goals and added 44 assists for 58 points in 52 games with Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg. Wolfsburg finished third in the 14 team league, just four points out of the overall lead.

Dave Keon: Gem of the 1961-62 Parkhurst Hockey Card Set

It only makes sense, coming off a Calder Memorial Trophy victory in 1960-61, that the Dave Keon rookie card would be the gem of the 1961-62 Parkhurst hockey card set. At a $250 value, Keon’s RC equals Gordie Howe’s card as the highest valued in the set. In 1961-62, Parkhurst put out 51 hockey cards. The complete set is valued at $1600 by Beckett Hockey Monthly and a common card is around $15.

Noel Price: AHL Hall of Fame Defenseman

Sometimes the price guide doesn’t tell the whole story. Listed as a semi-star, the Noel Price rookie card appears as number 6 in the 1958-59 Parkhurst set. The hockey card is valued at $20 in a 50 card set that as a whole is worth $1800, according to Beckett Hockey Monthly. The top hockey cards in the set of Jacques Plante and Maurice Richard of the Montreal Canadiens are each valued at $300. Yet, Price was a bit unsung in the history of the game.

5 of 6 Multiple Eddie Shore Award Winners Started Out in the OHL

The Eddie Shore Award is the American Hockey League equivalent of the NHL’s Norris Trophy or the Ontario Hockey League’s Max Kaminsky Trophy. The Eddie Shore was introduced, and has been handed out year since, for the 1958-59 season to the league’s best defenseman. There have been six different players that have won the Eddie Shore Award on two or more occasions. What I found interesting is that five of these six players starting out in the OHL (OHA, OMJHL).

$5,400 Gets You the Rookie Cards of the 6 Red Wings with Retired Numbers

Six jersey numbers hang from the rafters of the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, immortalizing six of the Detroit Red Wings greatest players. A complete collection of rookie hockey cards of all six players would be valued at $5,400. It’s just a matter of time before a seventh number joins them: the number 5 of Nicklas Lidstrom.

What Would Your Choices Be For an OHL Hall of Fame?

The Hockey Hall of Fame was created in 1943. In 1997, the IIHF created their own Hockey Hall of Fame. The American Hockey League kicked their Hall of Fame into gear in 2006. Even the Central Hockey League started their own Hall in 2012. I think all Ontario Hockey League fans would agree that it’s high time that the greats from the OHL get honoured.

3 OHL Grads Among Central Hockey League’s Top 10

At pretty much the 50 game mark of the Central Hockey League’s 2011-12 season, three Ontario Hockey League grads are among the top 20 point getters in the league. The CHL is currently led by Todd Robinson of the Evansville Icemen. The grad of the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks is nearly 20 points ahead of the top OHLer. No stranger to the opponent’s net, Robinson surpassed 100 points twice with Portland and five times in the UHL/IHL.

1971-72 O-Pee-Chee Error Cards

The 1971-72 O-Pee-Chee hockey card set features four cards that are considered to have uncorrected errors (UER). The errors are a bit finicky but, nonetheless, are considered by the experts to indeed be errors.
The highest profile of the four hockey cards is number 148, the Guy Lafleur rookie card. O-Pee-Chee was a company based in the very English city city of London, Ontario. This might explain the company’s difficulty with French names. The Guy Lafleur rookie card is considered an error card because the Hockey Hall of Fame legend’s last name is spelled La Fleur on the front and back. Beckett Hockey Monthly values this card at $200.

Plenty of OHL Goaltender of the Year Winners Still Active

The OHL Goaltender of the Year award has been handed out each season since 1987-88. The award is given to the top goaltender in the Ontario Hockey League, as voted on by the league’s coaches and general managers. Of the 24 Goaltender of the Year winners, as of the end of the 2010-11 OHL season, 13 are still actively playing hockey. This number includes last year’s winner, Mark Visentin, who is still in the OHL with the Niagara IceDogs. This number also counts Mike Murphy twice, as he is the only player to win the award twice. Fresh off their 2010-11 Robertson Cup victory over the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors, and their subsequent berth in the Memorial Cup, the Owen Sound Attack are vying for a visit to the post season again in 2011-12. 1966-67 Topps #35 – Bobby Orr Rookie Card

Back when I was a kid in the late 1970′s, my grandmother had one hockey card to her name and she used it as a bookmark. I begged her for that card and eventually got it. It was a 1966-67 Topps Gordie Howe. I had no idea of the value. At the time, it probably didn’t have all that much of a value. I just knew it was the coolest thing I’d seen – far better than my 1976-77 O-Pee-Chee’s that were all over my room. Good old Gordie Howe looking back at me from the television frame on the 1966-67 cardboard.

3 London Knights Grads are Monsters Across Lake Erie

As the crow flies, Cleveland is roughly the same distance from London as Detroit and Toronto are. There are 169 km between the John Labatt Centre and the Quicken Loans Arena, home of the American Hockey League’s Lake Erie Monsters. Helping the Monsters try and secure a visit to the post-season are three players that have called the JLC home. Lake Erie is currently on the outside looking in at ninth place in the AHL’s Western Conference.

Joe Primeau – Centre of the Toronto Maple Leafs Kid Line

Joe Primeau was the centreman on the Kid Line, a high-scoring trio that played for the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 1930′s. Along with linemates Busher Jackson, who we featured the other day, and Charlie Conacher, the Kid Line terrorized opposing National Hockey League goaltenders for several years.

Trio of Ontario Hockey League Grads on a Rampage in San Antonio

The AHL’s San Antonio Rampage are currently tied for sixth in the Western Conference. It’s looking good for the Rampage to make the Calder Cup playoffs in 2011-12 for just the third time in the team’s history. Since entering the American Hockey League for the 2002-03 (a reincarnation of the Adirondack Red Wings), San Antonio has seen the playoffs just twice, an early exit both times, losing the Conference Quarter-finals. The last time the Rampage were in the post season was 2007-08. The team is the AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers.

4 Ontario Hockey League Alumni in the Federal Hockey League’s Top 10

The other day, we featured some Ontario Hockey League grads that were among the top 20 scorers in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL). A little further to the northeast is a league of similar calibre, the Federal Hockey League (FHL). The FHL regular season is nearing the end at there are four OHL alumni in the top 10. The four might not be the most remembered OHL players, but they’re doing just fine a league that is mostly filled with NCAA and OPJHL players but is led by Pierre Dagenais, someone with NHL experience.

4 OHL Grads Among Top 20 in the SPHL

For those who don’t know, the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) is a nine-team league existing mostly in the area from Northern Florida to Ohio. The league is a step below the ECHL and similar to the Central Hockey League. The SPHL was formed for the 2004-05 season and typically plays a 56 game regular season schedule. Attendance for SPHL games is usually in the 1,500 to 3,500 range.

Bob Perreault: If Only NHL Expansion Had Come Sooner

If only NHL expansion had come sooner, the likes of Bob Perreault would have surely enjoyed a long and fruitful National Hockey League career. Similar to Marcel Paille, Perreault was an outstanding goaltender that excelled in the American Hockey League but never got his big break in the six team NHL. Initially, with the Montreal Canadiens organization, he stood third in line behind the great Jacques Plante. After being moved to Detroit, it was Sawchuk and Crozier that blocked Perreault from the NHL.

The History of the OHL’s 50 Goal Scorers

No matter the league and no matter the length of the schedule, a goal scorer’s true measure is always the crossing of the 50 goal plateau. The Ontario Hockey League is no exception. Despite a regular season schedule that is currently 14 games shorter than that of the National Hockey League, the number of 50 goal scorers is fairly similar between the two leagues.

With records going back to the 1951-52 OHA season, there have been 279 players, as of the end of the 2010-11 Ontario Hockey League season, that have scored 50 or more goals in a season. Of course, the record for most goals in a single season belongs to Ernie Godden of the Windsor Spitfires with 87 in 1980-81.

ECHL List of 50 Goal Scorers

The ECHL came into existence for the 1988-89 hockey season. The league began as the East Coast Hockey League, but like Kentucky Fried Chicken changing to just KFC, the East Coast Hockey League is now officially just the ECHL.
There have been 42 50+ goal performances in the history of the league, as of the end of the 2010-11 season. The record for most goals in a season is 85 by Trevor Jobe in 61 games for the Nashville Knights in 1992-93. There has been one other 80+ goal scorer, Bill McDougall of the Erie Panthers with 80 in just 57 games during the 1989-90 season.

Vic Hadfield: The Highest Valued Rookie Card in the 1962-63 Topps Series

The highest valued rookie card in the 1962-63 Topps series featured a young New York Rangers player, Vic Hadfield. Card number 60 is the Vic Hadfield rookie card and is valued by Beckett Hockey Monthly at $50. The full set is valued at $1300 with a common card going for $12. The highest valued card in the 1962-63 Topps series is Bobby Hull’s card which is valued at $300. Other notable rookie cards include Bruce Gamble ($40), Chico Maki ($20), Jim Neilson ($20) and Bob Perreault ($15).

Rookie Cards of the 1969 Hockey Hall of Fame Inductees

In 1969, six people entered the Hockey Hall of Fame, four players and two builders. Of the four players, three were a long time coming and one had been retired as a player for just two years. The rookie hockey cards of all are fairly rare and rather expensive.

104 Guelph Storm Alumni Active in 2011-12

The Guelph Storm are the decendants of the once great Toronto Marlboros team that has roots that trace back to 1904. After a brief stop in Hamilton, where they were known as the Dukes, the franchise moved to Guelph for the 1991-92 Ontario Hockey League season and doesn’t look to be leaving any time soon.

OHL Grads Dominating Italy Once Again

Fresh off the other day’s article about OHL grads owning the penalty boxes of Great Britain’s Elite Ice Hockey League, we take a look at another European league where Ontario Hockey League alumni dominate the sin bin. Italy’s Lega Italiana Hockey su Ghiaccio is, talent-wise, on par with the EIHL. The OHL can lay claim to five of the top 20 positions in the PIM race, including the number 1 and 2 slots. However, three of the top eleven point producers are also grads of the OHL, including number 3 and 5. Two players find themselves in the top 20 in each category. The LIHG is just a few games away from completing their 40 game regular season schedule.

OHL Grads Relegated to Enforcer Roles in Great Britain?

Is Great Britain’s Elite Ice Hockey League just using Ontario Hockey League grads for their fists? The EIHL typically has more than a few OHL alumni among the top ten scorers in the league. This year, there are just two in the top 20 with approximately 10 games to go in the regular season. These two, Mike Ramsay and Corey Neilson, fall in the 16th and 20th position. Ramsay, a player who was used sparingly by the Peterborough Petes over two partial seasons and Neilson, a 35 year old defenseman who last played for the Barrie Colts in 1997.

The Rookie Cards of the 4 Winners of the WHA’s Bill Hunter Trophy

The Bill Hunter Trophy was the WHA’s version of the Art Ross Trophy. For seven years between 1972-73 and 1978-79, the World Hockey Assocation handed out the Bill Hunter Trophy each year to the player with the most points during the regular season. Although Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull were the poster-children of the league, neither got their names on the Bill Hunter.

Enforcers – what the hockey world sorely needs today. Most of these guys are from the pre-Bettman era. Most could play a little hockey too. Judging by the values of some of the rookie cards, these players are still appreciated by collectors.

Kitchener Rangers Grad Looking For a Championship in the Czech Republic

Michal Dvorak played in the Ontario Hockey League for the Kitchener Rangers for three seasons from 1996-97 to 1998-99. The Czech born player arrived part way through his rookie season after starting the year in the Czech Extraliga. That year, the Rangers won the Central Division title and fell to the eventual Robertson Cup champions, the Oshawa Generals, in the semi-finals.

In 1967-68, the National Hockey League doubled in size and expanded to markets never explored before. Suddenly, there were two teams in California. The High Price of a Complete Gordie Howe Collection

Gordie Howe played in the NHL from 1946-47 to 1970-71 with the Detroit Red Wings. He then returned to the NHL for one season, 1979-80, with the Hartford Whalers. From 1973-74 to 1978-79, Howe played in the World Hockey Association with the Houston Aeros and New England Whalers. Between the two major leagues, Gordie played a total of 2,421 games (regular season and playoffs combined). He put an astounding 1,071 pucks in the net throughout those games.

Yet, over the forty plus years, just four players drafted by the Penguins have gone on to NHL careers consisting of more than 1,000 regular season games. One of the players is still active in the league and three of the four are most likely destined for the Hockey Hall of Fame.

In today’s National Hockey League, with advanced scouting and technology added to the fact that there are 30 teams and plenty of job openings, the first round picks at the NHL Entry Draft often, but not always, stick. In the 1970’s, it wasn’t so much the case. The fact that three of the top eight picks at the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft are now in the Hockey Hall of Fame is quite astounding.

About as far from Brampton and Ottawa as you can get in the world of hockey is Temirtau, Kazakhstan. Just a “Detroit to Montreal’s” distance from Mongolia and China, this city of 180,000 didn’t even exist before 1905. Today, a junior scout would easily overlook a Bantam player weighing just 140 lbs. Camille Henry is noted on the back of his rookie hockey card as being 5’10″ and a slim 141 lbs as an NHL player. The Camille Henry rookie card is featured in the 1954-55 Topps series as number 32. At a value of $80, according to Beckett Hockey Monthly, Henry’s is the second highest valued card in the set, next to Doug Mohns ($125), a long way from the $1800 that Gordie Howe’s card from that series is valued at. Camille also appears in the 1954-55 Parkhurst series on card number 73. Beckett does not rate this card higher than a common card.

26 Kitchener Rangers From 2007-08 Actively Playing in 2011-12

The 2007-08 Kitchener Rangers finished atop the Ontario Hockey League during the regular season with 110 points, earning them the Hamilton Spectator Trophy. The Rangers finished 28 points ahead of Midwest Division rival, the London Knights. The Rangers bulldozed the Plymouth Whalers, Sarnia Sting and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, losing just one game to the Hounds, enroute to a Robertson Cup showdown with the Belleville Bulls. The Bulls took the Rangers to seven games but Kitchener came out victorious.

Who Was Marcel Paille?: Marcel Paille is one of just 26 members of the American Hockey League Hall of Fame. Paille’s 1964-65 Topps rookie card as a member of the NHL’s New York Rangers is the most valuable rookie card in the series. Yet, how many hockey fans know who Marcel Paille was?

After playing junior for the Quebec Citadelles, Marcel Paille embarked on a professional hockey career as a goaltender that spanned from 1956-57 to 1973-74. In his rookie AHL season, 1956-57, his team, the Cleveland Barons, won the Calder Cup as the AHL playoff champions. Paille played sparingly for the New York Rangers from 1957-58 to 1964-65 with that final season being the only one he didn’t spend part of the year in the AHL.

4 London Knights That Have Won The Red Tilson Trophy: The Red Tilson Trophy has been awarded to the most outstanding player in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL, OMJHL, OHA) since 1944-45. The London Knights entered the OHA as the London Nationals for the 1965-66 season, renamed the Knights for 1968-69. In that time, four London Knights players have been named the recipient of the Red Tilson Trophy.

The 2001-02 Erie Otters weren’t the best team during the Ontario Hockey League’s regular season, although close. However, in the Robertson Cup playoffs, the Otters won 16 games while losing just five in capturing the championship. Erie took out the Sarnia Sting, London Knights and Windsor Spitfires before facing the Barrie Colts in the Robertson Cup finals. Erie took out Barrie in five games and earned a berth at the Memorial Cup tournament. The Otters lost in the semi-final to Victoriaville in overtime. The Kootenay Ice of the WHL were crowned Memorial Cup champions in the tournament held in Guelph, Ontario.
